To qualify for the official Master of Science (MSc) Degree (one year), a previous Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree is required and needs to be approved by the Swedish Council for Higher Education. We understand that your original Bachelor's Degree may be in a field unrelated or only partially related to your current job and interests. This is usually no problem, we are happy to accept most prior education as long as your current interests fall within the field of human factors and system safety. 

Those without a previous Bachelor's Degree are welcome to take part in the entire MSc programme for official course credits (ECTS). Upon completion of the programme, an official course credit Testimonium will be issued by Lund University.

Upon completion of the entire MSc programme the students who qualify for the official MSc Degree, will be able to request their official diploma from the Lund University Degree Office.

The programme has been developed specifically for practitioners and professionals (from all domains: healthcare, aviation, shipping, railway, (nuclear) power, (production) industry, etc.) who have time constraints due to their working obligations. Almost all of our students are full-time professionals, working with safety related issues. Therefore we run this course distance based, but with three mandatory Learning Laboratories on campus in Lund (these are included in the tuition fee for MSc students). As the programme runs part-time you can be expected to devote 20 hours per week of your time to the programme. This might vary with domain experience and familiarity with writing. 

The programmes starts in January with an intensive five-day learning laboratory in Lund. You will meet colleagues from other industries, eager to learn and faced with similar questions. How do you write good recommendations? Can your company prevent drift into failure? How do you hold people accountable without invoking defense mechanisms? Do your operators have the courage to say ‘no’ when trading safety off against production pressures?

Apart from the three mandatory learning laboratories the MSc is taught online. You get access to online assignments, lectures, reading guidance, video conferences, and on-line entry to the entire Lund University library. Tutoring assistance is always available. 

Each course is driven by your work on take-home questions and feedback from mentors and peer students on your answers, through a highly interactive virtual classroom. The programme takes two years to complete.

Your first year is devoted to studying the literature in synch with your fellow students. Every two weeks you will answer a new question about the literature, and you will give and receive feedback to and from your fellow students, as well as getting feedback from your mentor.

During the first year you will complete the first three courses. The second year is devoted to the fourth course (where you will get to prepare for the MSc thesis work by studying methods in Safety Science) and finally your thesis. We do expect your thesis to be connected to your professional concerns. 

Yes, you can. If you first take a Learning lab, and later on decide to participate in the full MSc programme, you will be awarded the course credits for the Learning Lab, under the condition that you have completed the corresponding homework assignments.

No, you cannot. This MSc program is based on commissioned education, meaning it is intended for employers who wish to send their employees for further education. Swedish law does not allow students to pay for their own education, so we will need information from your employer about sponsorship for your studies.
