Can I get a MSc. Degree if I do not have a Bachelor's?

To qualify for the official Master of Science (MSc) Degree (one year), a previous Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree is required and needs to be approved by Lund University. We understand that your original Bachelor's Degree may be in a field unrelated or only partially related to your current job and interests. This is usually no problem, we are happy to accept most prior education as long as your current interests fall within the field of human factors and system safety. 

Those without a previous Bachelor's Degree are welcome to take part in the entire Master's program for official course credits (ECTS). Upon completion of the program, an official Testimonium, stating that you have successfully completed the equivalent of the Master's program, will be awarded by us.

After enrolling in the Master's program, your application (including your CV and previous diplomas) will be send to Lund University's Admission Office, who will preliminarily assess whether you will qualify for the official MSc Degree. After this initial assessment we will be able to let you know whether you are qualified to receive the official MSc Degree. 

Upon completion of the entire Master's program, for the students who qualify for the official MSc Degree, we will send your previous diplomas to Lund University's Degree Office, who will then conclusively assess your previous diplomas and (after final approval) send you your new MSc Degree. (If you plan to obtain your Bachelor's degree during the course of our program, please let us know, so that we will be able to apply for your MSc Degree.)

Can I combine the Master's program with my job?

The Master's program has been developed specifically for practitioners and professionals (from all domains: healthcare, aviation, shipping, railway, (nuclear) power, (production) industry, etc.) who have time constraints due to their working obligations. Almost all of our students are full-time professionals, working with safety related issues. Therefore we run this course distance based, but with various possibilities to join our intensive Learning Laboratories (which are included in the tuition fee for Master's students) here in Lund. As the program runs part-time you can be expected to devote up to 20 hours per week of your time to the program, but this will vary with domain experience and familiarity with writing. 

You will start with an intensive residential session of five days at Lund University in Sweden. You will meet colleagues from other industries, eager to learn and faced with similar questions. How do you write good recommendations? Can your company prevent drift into failure? How do you hold people accountable without invoking defense mechanisms? Do your operators have the courage to say ‘no’ when trading safety off against production pressures?

After the first residential session, and in addition to optional Learning Laboratories and other colloquia that we organize with either Lund staff or visiting professors from all over the world, the MSc is taught online. You get access to online lectures, reading guidance and on-line entry to the entire Lund University library. Tutoring assistance is always available. 

Each course is driven by your work on take-home questions and feedback from tutors and other students on your answers, through a highly interactive virtual classroom. The program takes two years to complete.

Your first year is devoted to studying the literature in synch with your fellow students. Every two weeks you will answer a new question about the literature, and you will give and receive feedback to and from your fellow students, as well as getting feedback from your tutor.

During the first year you will complete the first three courses. The second year is devoted to the fourth course (where you will get to write a literature review on your favorite topic) and your thesis that may well build further on that topic. We do expect your thesis to be connected to your professional concerns.

If I first take a Learning Lab, can I subtract that cost from the Master's tuition fee?

Yes, you can. If you first participate in a Learning Laboratory, and only thereafter decide that you want to participate in the full Master's program, we can deduct the cost of the Learning Lab from the tuition fee of the Master's.

If I first take a Learning Lab, can I get academic credit for that in the Master's later on?

Yes, you can. If you first take a Learning lab, and later on decide to participate in the full Master's program, you will be awarded the course credits for the Learning Lab, under the condition that you have completed the corresponding homework assignments.

Can I pay for the Master's program or the Learning Labs myself?

No, you cannot. This MSc program is based on commissioned education, meaning it is intended for employers who wish to send their employees for further education. Swedish law does not allow students to pay for their own education, so we will need information from your employer about sponsorship for your studies.
